History - How to Arrive
Barberini Palace is a magnificent palace in Rome worth visiting for its splendor and collection of art. It is a remarkable sample of the Baroque style and a meaningful landmark of the papal patronage. When Maffeo Barberini became Pope Urban VIII in 1623, he decided to build a grand family palazzo. The construction started in 1625 and the famous architect Bernini highly contributed. The palace was completed in 1633 and has a central part and two wings. The “salone”, the principle central hall, culminates in the great vault with the fresco “Divine Providence”, a pictorial celebration of the spiritual and temporal glories of the Barberini.
Bernini also designed the facade overlooking the garden and staircase, in the 3 classical Greek styles (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian).
The Palace has hosted the National Gallery of Art since 1949: the paintings range from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
